England shock Canada to move into women's basketball final
England reached the women's basketball gold medal match with an upset 65-53 victory over Canada at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre on Friday.
Canada entered the game as the favourite after defeating England 80-54 in Townsville earlier in the competition, but England took control in the second quarter building a 16 point halftime lead on the back of defensive pressure that forced Canada into turnovers and poor shots.
Canada mounted a second-half comeback, led by Ruth Hamblin's inside scoring, to draw within 10 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough as England maintained its advantage.
Rachel Vanderwall led England with 20 points.
England is now guaranteed to improve on the bronze it won at Melbourne 2006, the only previous time basketball was held at the Commonwealth Games.
Australia will take on England tonight for the gold medal.
