Jamaica player switch could lead to netball gold

Jamaica's Sunshine Girls are toying with the shock tactic of using netball sharpshooter Jhaniele Fowler-Reid in defence.

The bronze medallists at the Glasgow 2018 Commonwealth Games are blessed with two of the world's most prolific goal shooters of the past decade: Fowler-Reid and Romelda Aiken.

But two athletes cannot fill one spot and one must forgo her preferred position if they are to both feature in the run-on seven.

Fowler-Reid started both matches at goal shooter against New Zealand in the recent Taini Jamison Trophy series in Auckland.

The 196cm captain has spent time training at goal keeper since arriving at the Gold Coast this week and could be used in the position when her team tackles Fiji in their Pool A opener on Thursday 5 April at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Defender Shamera Sterling gave nothing away when asked about the plan but hinted the unusual option was not out of the question.

"That’s exciting to have an advantage of two tall shooters like that," Sterling said. "But that’s the coach's decision."

Fowler-Reid shot 790 goals at 92 per cent for her New Zealand national league team Southern Steel in 2017.

Queensland-based Aiken did not have her best season in 2017 but is the all-time leading scorer in Australia's national league.
