It’s the battleground that will host fierce displays of strength, speed and precision. Moments of suspense will be broken by roaring cheers and victorious celebrations. This is Badminton, Para Powerlifting, Weightlifting and Wrestling at the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre.

Before you leave
Avoid bags
It will be much faster to enter the venue. If necessary, make sure your bag will fit under your seat, as there are no cloakrooms in GC2018 venues.
Know your limits
You will pass through an airport style screening process as you enter the venue. Restrictions apply to certain items, such as water and sunscreen, so please check the

Water: Commercially sealed water bottle up to 350ml. Only bring empty re-usable transparent plastic bottles (free water refill points are available in venue)
Sunscreen: Sunscreen bottles up to 250ml

Plan your journey
Use the GC2018 Journey Planner on the app and make sure you allow plenty of time for travel and entry, and your departure after the event.
Arrive early
Don’t miss a moment of the action. Entry gates will open up to 90 minutes before the beginning of each session.
Keep your ticket with you
Ensure you have the correct ticket for your session. It also entitles you to free public transport* to and from the event.
Getting there and back
GC2018 is the largest sporting event Australia has seen this decade, so make sure you allow plenty of time for travel, queuing at transport hubs and security checks.
There are many travel options to get you to and from the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre. Walking and cycling could be the best option, and public transport is free with your ticket.*

Get active
If you’re travelling locally, walking or cycling may be the easiest way to get to the venue. Bike parking is available near the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre.
Take the bus
A GC2018 shuttle will take you to the venue from Broadbeach South. Bus routes 740 and 745 will run frequently during the Games and can take you close to the venue. Route GC2018 will also take you close to the venue.
Catch the train
Catch the train to Nerang station. From there, you can walk or take a Games Shuttle close to the venue.
Ride the G:Link
Walk or catch a bus to the G:link light rail, then get off at Broadbeach South station and take a Games Shuttle close to the venue.
Park 'n' ride
Book a space at Yatala or Millaroo Drive North Park ‘n’ Rides for the duration of your session. From here, you can take a Games Shuttle close to the venue. Spaces are limited and you must book a spot.
Accessible transport
Accessible shuttle buses will be available and Park ‘n’ Ride spaces can be booked via the GC2018 Journey Planner.
Grandstand tips
Keep hydrated
Hydration is important for both athletes and spectators, but make sure you know what bottles you can and can’t bring into the venue.
Stay sun safe
The Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre is an indoor venue with outdoor features, so consider sun protection. For more health advice, visit the Queensland Health website.
Be a good sport

Focus is key
Because four different sports are hosted at the venue, take note of messages and direction information as you enter and leave the venue.
Get energised
Bring your energy and support. Your cheers and encouragement could make all the difference to an athlete’s medal-winning lift, grapple or smash.
Settle in for the session

Make a day of it
Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre is centrally located as part of Carrara Precinct. Head to Festival 2018 in Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach.
Fast facts
- Badminton will use approximately 8,400 shuttles at GC2018 which will be redistributed as a legacy item.
- The ultimate test of upper body strength, some para powerlifters can lift up to three times their bodyweight.
- Weightlifting shoes are designed for maximum stability and typically have a raised heel of 3cm.
- Watch out for the flying squirrel, fireman and gut wrench at Wrestling. They’re names of some of the moves that will be on display on the mat.
